Maple Syruping with the Twin Cities Metro Growers Network

03/11/2024 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM CT

Description

Whether you’re looking to get started or home in on syruping skills, this workshop is a great learning tool for small-scale enthusiasts. Extension Educator Lia Spaniolo will lead participants through the tapping and syrup-making process with presentations and hands-on activities.

Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the history of maple syrup, laws and regulations, and techniques and equipment for extracting and processing sap for sustainability.

Guest Speaker: Shannon Stewart runs a small maple syruping operation, tapping 5-6 trees from her and neighboring yards (with neighbors' permission!). Last year, she got about 4 gallons of syrup which she gives to neighbors, friends and even a little leftover to sell.

Agenda: The event will begin in the Recreation Room at the Coon Rapids Civic Center. After the indoor presentation portion, we will walk/drive a couple of blocks to see Stewart's "neighborhood sugarbush." Please come prepared to spend about half of the workshop time outside.

There will be light snacks and hot cider served.

Advance registration required. No walk-ups. This free workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please register with the University of Minnesota Extension here: https://extension.umn.edu/event/maple-syruping-coon-rapids

Address: "Recreation Room" at Coon Rapids Civic Center - 11155 Robinson Drive Coon Rapids, MN 55433

This event is hosted by the Twin Cities Metro Growers Network and University of Minnesota Extension. Funds for the maple syrup workshops were provided by a Minnesota NCR SARE mini-grant.

SFA staff and volunteers occasionally take photos during our workshops, cafe chats and field days for promotional purposes and to use as documentation of events to share with our funders.  If you do not wish to be photographed, please let our event host know -- we'll make every effort to make sure you are not photographed.
